Orvieto, Umbria

If you start in Todi like we did you can expect to arrive in Orvieto in about 45-minutes. It’s a windy drive on a 2 lane road and during the late fall, you’ll find bright yellow and orange foliage lining the road. This trip confirmed that autumn is the best time of year to visit Umbria. The only downside is that truffle season doesn’t begin until December.

Orvieto is beautiful during the day but during the night it shines. And if you go during the cooler months you’ll find the streets much emptier. We nearly had the entire duomo to ourselves, emphasizing what it means to feel small in the presence of something so grand. Also, with the jubilee taking place in Italy this year, it’s the perfect opportunity to visit somewhere off the beaten path.
