Happy Juneteenth!
We're a day late but that's because we were enjoying ourselves : ) Eating, drinking, and spending some necessary time offline. On days like today, I think about how grateful I am. I have ancestors that fought to build a better life for me. My Black grandfather escaped segregation in the south and my grandmother moved to the US from Panama to build a whole new life. A power couple if you ask me.
Growing up I often found it hard to relate to characters in mainstream books and TV shows because they rarely wrote about interracial families that looked like mine. Looking back it's probably one of the reasons I was quite shy (re: awkwardly embarrassed) about my very strong Afro Latina/Jamaican/Southern mom's side of the family and my very European-esque father's side. Let's just say 10-year-old Skyler was frequently confused and had a hard time relating to many of her peers.
To laugh about this now after what felt like years of a literal identity crisis is the best feeling in the world! If I could meet 10-year-old Skyler I would tell her not to worry, there'd come a day when she'd figure it out, and she should really just call her grandma because she always has all the answers.
Today, I have role models that look like me, and that makes me so happy and proud! So happy Juneteenth! Thank you for opening these newsletters month after month, forwarding them, and telling your friends about this delicious olive oil company cofounded by this 'milkshake baby' (yes, that's what I called myself growing up).
