Grab Summer by the Tomatoes 🍅
Grab Summer By The Tomatoes
Thank you Mother Nature for always coming in hot (literally) with tomato season. Here in Calabria tomatoes are at their peak! There seems to be limitless tomato salad, tomato sauce, and roasted tomatoes. If you can tomato it, we will eat it.
This month we’re publishing 3 recipes. The first is one of our favorites which you’ve seen us make 1,000 times, Pasta al Pomodoro. So why are we publishing it again?
It’s delicious.
We’ve revamped our original recipe.
Pasta Al Pomodoro 2.0
Let’s call this pasta al pomodoro 2.0. She got an IOS update and now is her time to shine! The main difference between al pomodoro 2.0 and our original pasta al pomodoro is the texture of the sauce. Al pomodoro 2.0 requires *one extra pot* and an immersion blender. Also, using the sweetest and smallest tomatoes you can find makes this sauce the closest thing we’ve ever had to dessert pasta. (BTW, have you seen how they’re trying to make dessert pasta a thing?).
We have to be honest, it feels at least 2x more decadent than our original recipe. And sometimes, just sometimes, in Italian cuisine more is truly more.
Find the full recipe here! Make it, share, and don’t forget to tag us : )

Meet Brasilena
We shared a photo of brasilena on Instagram last week and there was an influx of DMs inquiring about the delightful bubbly caffeinated drink! Brasilena is one of Calabria’s greatest gifts to the world (olive oil is first, duh). It’s a caffeinated, sugary, bubbly drink that is best-consumed ice cold on a hot day. Drinking it for the first time I was almost reminded of chugging cold cherry cola (say that 3x fast) on one of the four hot summer days we *used* to have in Oakland, CA when I was a kid.
Giuseppe grew up drinking Brasilena starting when he was 9 or 10 (nothing like caffeinated youth). Today he still craves the drink on hot summer days after going for a swim.
IG Live: Nonna Filomena’s Garden Tour & Green Vinegar Tomatoes.
Idk what you’re doing this Friday, but you should join us on IG Live because we’re hosting two really wonderful ladies. Stephanie Rizzolo and her indomitable nonna, Filomena (AKA Phyllis). They’ll take us on a tour of Nonna Filomena’s NJ Garden, focusing on the tomato varieties she is growing and how she uses them. We’ll pick some green tomatoes, then go inside and see how she jars her Green Vinegar Tomatoes!
About Our Guests
Filomena is originally from Vallata, a small town in the province of Avellino, Campania. She arrived in the U.S. in 1950 without shoes or anything to her name and is one of nine children. She grew up in the mountains, much of her cooking is very rustic or she learned from her aunts or by watching Lydia Bastianich.
When she’s not whipping something up in her Jersey City kitchen, refining her dance moves, or playing the ukulele, you’ll likely find Stephanie experiencing and sharing the local cuisine around the world in her quest to plan the most awe-inspiring and culturally rich journeys through her travel company, SETTE. A former NY Knicks City Dancer and competition show junkie (contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Chopped), she is on a perpetual quest to enrich her client’s travels through the finest food and carefully curated experiences.
Stephanie has a deep appreciation for her Italian heritage, which has yielded a genuine enthusiasm and expertise in Italian tourism and hospitality. She is a contributing writer for La Cucina Italiana, a Condé Nast publication that focuses on Italian cuisine, one of her greatest passions. She is also the Director of Communications for acclaimed pizzeria, Razza in Jersey City, and a content manager for Italian importer, Gustiamo.
