My Italian family members (from Molfetta) lived in New Jersey and Manhattan Special was the only kind of coffee soda around when I was growing up. When I lived in the Bronx and Brooklyn it was available in areas with Italian stores/delis e.g. Arthur Avenue but not more widely than that. My aunt is still a devoted fan!
Ciao friends! My dad, nickname "Brooklyn Tommy," loves Manhattan Special. It's one of his favorite drinks—a special treat for sure! When I was growing up in New Jersey, it was available at Italian speciality stores like Pastosa (originally from Brooklyn + maker of locally famous fresh ravioli). Recently I found Manhattan Special at A. Litteri, Washington, D.C.'s own Italian specialty store, which trucks down chocolate-dipped bakery cookies, fresh mozzarella ("mutz" in Brooklynese), and other goodies from New York. Manhattan Special is delicious! I hope to try Brasilena someday, until then I'll have to recreate it with the recipe in your newsletter. Thanks for sharing!
